Scalvy was founded in 2022 to advance electric mobility and renewable energy technologies across government and industry sectors. Scalvy's dual-use technology has applications in both e-mobility as well as energy storage.
E-MOBILITY
Scalvy’s core technology is a cutting-edge modular electric powertrain (e-powertrain). Designed with a focus on off-road vehicles, its building block-like architecture is vendor-agnostic, making it compatible with components from any manufacturer. In addition to its cross-vendor compatibility, Scalvy’s solution delivers higher efficiency, extended range, and enhanced reliability – all at a reduced weight, size, and cost.
The heart of Scalvy’s technology is a three-layer Smart Integrated Module (SIM), which integrates the battery management system, power conversion system, including the DC/AC drive unit, the DC/DC converter, and the board charger; and the software control algorithms into one board.
Unlike conventional e-powertrains, a modular e-powertrain is scalable and customizable to any vehicle type and size in a 6-8 months faster process. Increased capacity and power are achieved by adding more storage cells with their integrated electronics rather than redesigning the whole storage and power conversion system. Scalvy’s e-powertrain can drive single, dual, or quad motors by adding additional power-driving circuits into every SIM board. In other words, the same core technology will be used in different vehicles across the off-road sector, including construction, mining, and more - simplifying the service process for technicians and easing the transition to electrification.
Once integrated, Scalvy’s solution delivers superior performance and reliability. Scalvy’s e-powertrain has proven 40-60% more efficient than conventional systems due to the unique proprietary switching scheme on the motor drive modules, highly efficient components, and the ability to push the system voltage boundaries into a higher territory (>1200 V). Further, using SIMs frees the energy storage devices from following the weakest cell or module, leading to an extended range of 8-15%. Scalvy’s system can fast-charge the battery storage modules due to its unique load-balancing of battery modules and cells’ state of charge levels. Off-road vehicles can fast-charge from any available AC source in remote and harsh environments without costly, bulky off-board chargers. Scalvy’s system can isolate the faulted area and function with reduced capacity in both battery and powertrain faults. The unique, fully distributed architecture eliminates every point of failure in the system. An operator can detect faulty battery or powertrain modules and replace them without special training, as all modules are plug-and-play with adaptable software algorithms. Ultimately, Scalvy’s system reduces fault impact by >90% and maintenance downtime by 75%, increasing fleet uptime and preserving workers’ time.
ENERGY STORAGE
In addition to transforming the e-mobility industry through modular electric powertrains, Scalvy’s SIMs have dual-use in energy storage applications through modular battery management systems (mBMS) which integrates the power conversion system (PCS), digital controller, battery management system (BMS), and energy management system (EMS) into one physically connected platform. A mBMS delivers improved performance, extended lifecycle, and enhanced safety and reliability – all at a lower cost than the incumbent technologies. Scalvy’s system is also capable of multiple service delivery, stacking demand response, energy arbitrage, peak load reduction, increased PV self-consumption, and level 2 and level 3 electric vehicle charging.
