Every year more than 4millon tons of toxic chemicals are applied to the soil to produce the food we eat (enough to fill 2 times the Hoover dam). Regulations on agricultural practices are increasingly demanding (governments are starting to ban the most common pesticides) and agrochemicals companies are looking for new ways to make pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, less toxic. Even though the biological (organic) market is growing really fast, is not yet possible to produce all the food we need without chemicals. So we need new technologies to reduce chemical's toxicity impact on the environment, humans, and on the food we consume. That is why in Unibaio we developed a biodegradable nanoparticle that reduces application rates up to 80% in all agrochemical formulas. In this way, pesticides companies can lower the toxicity of pesticides without replacing the entire formula farmers are used to use. UNIBAIO's particles can be used by agrochemical companies to modify their formulations to: 1) be approved by the strictest environmental regulations, 2) reduce manual operation, lowering farmer's application costs, 3) improve yield & competitiveness. Our particles can be used in any kind of pesticide and fertilizers, from the traditional ones to the bio/organic ones. Our income model focuses on both licensing the know-how or providing the particles. Our nanocarriers are made of natural compounds like shrimp waste & clay, using a circular model.
