U.S. Green Building Council - Los Angeles (USGBC-LA) was founded in 2002, and with our team and more than 3,000 members, most of whom reside in the greater Los Angeles region, has extensive experience in providing sustainability program management, related technical and support services, environmental education and training, and project management.
USGBC-LA’s mission is to accelerate all aspects of sustainability in the built environment to create a more sustainable region for all.
USGBC-LA is a recognized leader in the field of sustainability with a proven reputation for excellence in outreach, education, and community-based projects. USGBC-LA was recognized with LA County’s Green Leadership Award for Best Nonprofit in 2017 for its leadership and excellence in hosting the International Greenbuild Conference and Expo which brought 18,000 people to Los Angeles. More recently, in August of 2020 USGBC-LA hosted its 19th Annual Municipal Green Building Conference as its first virtual conference with over 1,300 attendees. Also, in 2020 USGBC-LA launched the Talent Portal, a regional hub for training, recorded content, job postings, featured employers, and a local mentor network.
USGBC-LA has nearly a twenty year history of running impactful programs that have demonstrated behavior and cultural change amongst the communities of Los Angeles. These range from training on a wide range of green building best practices and certifications, to more recently, assistance with sustainable rebuilding in the wake of wildfire, partnering with building owners to implement healthy building standards, supporting the City of LA’s Green Business Certification, and execution on a wide range of educational, community, and building tour events. Education is a major focus for USGBC-LA, having worked with Building Skills Partnership and SEIU to certify over 1,400 janitors through the Green Janitor Education Program.
Additionally, USGBC-LA offers Green Professionals Fundamentals and Resiliency training in collaboration with the LA County Metropolitan Authority, training over 800 of their employees to improve the culture of sustainability throughout the organization. To further promote sustainability education and awareness, USGBC-LA is proud to have a Green Schools Committee, which activates community members around improving the health, wellness, beauty and efficiency of their local schools. Our Committee members have created a specialized curriculum and conducted workshops for over 1,000 students, promoting impactful Sustainability Education for all types of schools as well as assisted with over 50 projects organized to green school sites in our region ranging from garden builds to solar installations and beautification programs.
USGBC-LA promotes sustainability in under-served areas through the annual Legacy Project which is sourced through a competition of local non-profits and community groups. The project is a gift to the City from USGBC-LA and is meant to be inspiring, beautiful, replicable, and educational in nature. These projects connect USGBC-LA with local communities and leverage our resources in terms of volunteer professionals to design and build the projects. Along the way, we introduce the concepts of energy efficiency, water conservation, and technology to new communities through these Demonstration projects.
