This solicitation will pilot a new mechanism to competitively award follow-on funding for the most promising energy storage technologies that have previously received an award from an eligible California Energy Commission (Energy Commission) program or United States (U.S.) federal agency for technology demonstration and deployment research of the technology identified in the proposal.

Technologies eligible are:
- Flywheel technologies.
- Flow battery technologies.
- Thermal energy storage technologies.
- Modular compressed air energy storage system technologies.
- Advanced battery technologies that do not include Lithium Ion chemistries
The purpose of this solicitation is to fund technology demonstration and deployment of energy storage projects that will represent a 25 percent or higher scale up in power or energy from the previously awarded Energy Commission or U.S. federal agency energy storage projects. The goal is to allow researchers to continue their technology development without losing momentum or pausing to fundraise from private sources. Researchers and technology developers typically require multiple rounds of public funding to advance their technology to a state where it can attract interest and investment from the private sector. However, the time between when a successful publicly-funded project ends and the time new public funding becomes available can be 1-2 years or longer, causing significant delays in the technology’s development.
